2.1.24 - Lessons of loss
Good morning ,
In April 2021, I lost my grandpa. In April 2022, I lost my step dad. In November 2023, I lost my grandma on my dad's side and then less than 2 months later I lost my grandma on my mom's side.
We had the funeral for my grandma yesterday. It was a beautiful service and there was so much love in the room to celebrate her life.
As you can imagine, I was pretty emotional. She was my last grandparent to go.
There was comfort knowing she is in heaven reunited with my grandpa and other family that has already went home.
There was confusion trying to understand why my family has had so many losses in such a short amount of time.
I don't understand why but there are a few lessons I have learned during these times.
Lesson 1 - Our time here is temporary. This is a temporary place with temporary things. We have something much greater to look forward to.
Lesson 2 - When we pass, we take nothing. No one gets to take their favorite purse, favorite outfit, favorite beauty products or what money they have saved up. None of this stuff can do anything for us when we are gone. It doesn't mean that we can't enjoy it while we are here, but we can't put more value on stuff than people.
Lesson 3 - This focus culture has on money, materials and status will not bring anyone peace or joy. Neither of my grandmas were rich or materialistic, but both of them were happy and they lived a good life. Life is not about loving things. It's about loving people.
Lesson 4 - Family is so important. Sadly, losing a loved one can either tear a family apart or bring them together. After my grandma passed our family came together and everyone helped to make the service special. We spent the day at my grandma's putting together pictures, choosing music, writing the program and sharing memories. It reminded me of how blessed we are to have a family that came together to support one another.
Lesson 5 - Make family and loved ones a priority. You never know how much time is left. Everyone is busy. Everyone has a lot going on. So many times I have thought about someone and then got busy and forgot to reach out. I'm trying to get better at this. Anytime I think of someone I try to send a text or message if I can't call. Just a quick, "hey I was thinking of you. how are you?".
I don't know if you have lost anyone recently, but I hope you can take something away from today's message. Life is short. A lot of this stuff that we think matters, doesn't matter much at all. Let's shift our focus to what's really important. Family, friends, love, peace, joy, and spreading the good news of Jesus.
I appreciate you being a part of my community. It's always more than skin care :)
